EFFECT OF SODIUM CARBONATE COOKING ON THE ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS OF WHEAT STRAW

Wheat straw is an important renewable lignocellulosic biomass which is of great potential for the production of bioethanol. In this paper, sodium carbonate (SC) was used as pretreatment to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw. The effect of SC pretreatment on enzymatic hydrolysis was evaluated by the sugar recovery. After wheat straw pretreated by sodium carbonate with 8% TTA (as Na2O) at 130°C, the sugar recovery is over 60% at a cellulase loading of 20 FPU/g cellulose. Oxygen delignification and PFI refining were used as post treatment of SC pulp. An extra 5% sugar recovery of enzymatic hydrolysis was obtained after SC pulp treated by oxygen delignification with 6% Na2CO3 charge. The effect of FPI refining is not remarkable. The results show that sodium carbonate pretreatment combined with oxygen delignification is a promising way to improve the enzymatic saccharification of straw materials.
