COMPARISON OF SEVERAL PRETREATMENTS ON CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS AND ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS OF RICE STRAW
Rice straw is an attractive raw material to produce fuel ethanol due to its abundant source and low cost. Like all other lignocellulosic biomass, pretreatment is required for rice straw to facilitate high enzymatic saccharification. Therefore, development of practical and environmentally friendly pretreatment methods is of great importance to bioethanol production from rice straw. In this paper, several pretreatment methods of rice straw, including autohydrolysis, acetic acid, sulfomethylation, sodium carbonate and green liquor (sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide), were compared to evaluate their effects on the chemical compositions and enzymatic saccharification. The results show that green liquor and sodium carbonate pretreatments are the most effective methods for rice straw to obtain a high sugar recovery. As green liquor and sodium carbonate are intermediate products in the chemical recovery of an alkaline pulp mill, these pretreatments provide a potential way for the repurposing a part of or the entire pulping mill for ethanol production. The enzymatic hydrolysis sugar yield pretreated by sodium carbonate is slightly lower than that pretreated by green liquor. The enzymatic hydrolysis sugar yield is about 42.1% on the basis of original rice straw or a sugar conversion ratio of close to 80% when rice straw is pretreated by green liquor with 4% TTA as Na2O at 140°C. Under these conditions, only 12.8% of total sugar is dissolved into the black liquor whereas almost all silica remains with the pulp. Similar carbohydrate conversion can be achieved by pretreatment with sulformethylation. But the cost effective of this process need to be evaluated for repurposing. However, it may be an attractive option for a greenfield mill if the sulfonated lignin can be utilized and thus eliminate the requirement of a chemical recovery system.
