MODIFICATION OF OCC PULP BY LACCASE WITH PHENOLS IN WHITE WATER

This paper studied the mechanism of natural mediators (small molecule lignin derived phenols that existing in APMP (Alkali Peroxide Mechanical Pulp) white water) in laccase-assisted modifying of OCC (Old Corrugated Container) pulp. Some lignin derived phenols represents an alternative to synthetic mediators which cause some economic and environmental concerns. Our work shows that APMP white water contains some small molecule phenol compounds. The laccase treatment using lignin derived phenols that existing in APMP white water as laccase mediator has provided an efficient way to increase wet strength of OCC handsheet and improve quality of white water circuit. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measures were used to study the property of OCC after laccase/ lignin derived phenols treatment. GC-MS analysis gives evidences of APMP white water contains syringol and coniferyl alcohol. Laccase caused the highest removal of syringol and coniferyl alcohol, 48.69% and 100% respectively; The SEM images of laccase treated fibers and laccase / natural mediator that existing in APMP white water treated fibers show: The surfaces of laccase treated fibers appeared rough and vertical packed micro fibers in OCC fiber surface were observed; after laccase/natural mediator that existing in APMP white water system treatment, the surfaces of OCC fibers appeared smooth and a surface adhesion between fibers was observed. In addition 30.8% improvement of wet ring crush strength and 11.6% improvement of wet tensile strength were observed after laccase/natural mediator (lignin derived phenols which existing in APMP white water) treatment.
