IMPROVING THE ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF UNBLEACHED KRAFT PULP WITH LACCASE AND PHENOL COMPOUNDS

Unbleached Kraft liner fibers were reacted with laccase in the presence of different phenol compounds (Propyl gallate(PG), p-Coumaric acid(PCA), Ferulic Acid(FA)) with the aid of the oxidation-reduction of laccase and the performance of the phenol compounds. After the enzymatic stage, the results of the treated kraft pulps with scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the increase of kappa numbers and the surface feature of fibers indicated that the phenol compounds may be linked to the surface of fibers by covalent bond to some extent. The evaluation of the type of dissolution of paper showed that the paper treated by laccase/phenol compounds belonged to non-dissolution type, which were speculated these phenol compounds grafting on fiber. In this paper, oxford plate test and shake flask method were used to examine the antibacterial property of phenol compounds and handsheet respectively. The results demonstrated that the handsheet paper obtained with laccase/phenols showed a greater efficacy against the growth of bacteria than the paper treated only with laccase. These results suggested that these phenol compounds can be acted as antimicrobial agents, which can be considered to be applied to the food packaging according to the function of the obtained paper.
