ANALYSIS OF STICKIES FROM DRYER CYLINDER OF PACKAGE PAPER MACHINE USING RECYCLED FIBER AS RAW MATERIAL
At present, recycled fibers are the main raw material for the production of packaging paper and paperboard. In such a process, the plastic- or other non-fiber based sticky particles in the recycled fibers may cause significant operational problems, for example adhering to the dryers of the paper machine. To develop effective solutions to these problems, it is necessary to determine these contaminants. In this work, the organic and inorganic substances in a sticky sample taken from the dryer section of paper machine were characterized by using combination of different solvents, including ethanol, hexane and dichloro-methane. Furthermore, they were analyzed by using FTIR and X-ray. The results show that the organics account for 94%, and 45.7% of which are soluble in solvents, and they originate from fiber material and adhesives, such as acetic ester (VAE or EVA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and phenyl containing compounds. The inorganics are only 6%, and they are mainly made up of calcium, magnesium, silica and aluminum, which originated from filler, sizing precipitator and pigment in coating latex.
