APPLICATION OF FLUORESCENCE TECHNOLOGY IN MONITORING HYDROPHOBIC CONTAMINANTS IN SECONDARY FIBERS

During pulping and papermaking process,contaminants such as pressure-sensitive,hot melt,coating,ink binding adhesives from recycle paper as well as lipophilic wood resins,are readily released and dispersed in the furnish along with the secondary fibers.Those hydrophobic deposits will build up within the paper machine headbox,forming fabrics,press sections and dryers,and in the paper sheet finally,which results in lower production,efficiency and quality. As above deposits could be easily defined as hydrophobic substances that may occur tacky deposits severely,a fluorescent technology was applied for tracking the hydrophobic substances to give an intuitionistic estimation.This article introduces an off-line handhold evaluation tool - hydrophobicity meter - affiliating to DC-PRO* technology.The proactive approach was applied for system survey,fixative,dispersant,detackifier,and ASA performance screening,and filler recovering.This method helps papermakers to understand the real situation of contaminants. By combining this fluorescent technology & quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based on-line technology; paper manufacturer could avoid utilizing deposit control programs in a black-box manner with demonstrated successes at various grades.The described novel approach that combines continuous online monitoring with a full-scale chemistry control program helps papermakers to improve operating efficiency and ultimately obtain eROI at a sustainable and green development model.
