FUNCTIONAL-MODIFIED POROUS CACO3 AS MICROCAPSULES FOR ANTIMICROBIAL PAPER PRODUCTS

The utilization of recently-developed porous calcium carbonate (CC) as microcapsules for value-added hygiene products including paper ones is of great interest. To render the paper antimicrobial, the porous CC was modified via the antimicrobial guanidine-based polymer,in conjunction of the loading of FDA-approved antibiotic,i.e.,triclosan (TS).FT-IR and zetapotential measurements were conducted in an attempt to characterize the polymer modified CC.TGA was also applied to quantify the amount of antimicrobial polymer on the CC.Due to the porous structures, the modified CC acted as a novel capsules which could accommodate the antibiotics or biocides via an appropriate loading process. In this work, the duration time, polymer content and the feed ratio of capsules to TS were investigated. The results indicated that guanidine polymer on the CC surface improved the amount of TS loaded into the capsules because of the potential interaction between amine group of the polymer and TS.The elevated temperature promoted the release; and the complete release was reached within 48h.The antimicrobial tests indicated the excellent antimicrobial performance was also achieved, implying the strong synergistic effects between the loaded antibiotics and surface antimicrobial polymers.
