MODIFIED FATTY OILS IN PAPER SIZING AS GREEN ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL SIZING AGENTS BASED ON CRUDE OIL
Vegetable oils derived from different sources have been modified with maleic anhydride to produce a new, green paper sizing agent, which is a promising substitute of petrochemical-based ASA sizes. For a better understanding of their important characteristics including sizing efficiency and viscosity they were comprehensively characterized analytically including attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR),1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with full resonance assignment, and mass spectrometry.Furthermore, their hydrolysis behavior, sizing efficiency, and curing characteristics were studied in comparison to alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA),which is the most prominent, fast curing sizing agent in neutral to alkaline paper sizing.
