THE SYNTHESIS OF BAGASSE FIBER-BASED OIL-ABSORPTIVE MATERIALS
Bagasse is the fibrous residue from sugarcane juice extraction and is one of the most usable by-products in sugar mills.Oil spills are of great scientific concern due to their environmental and economical impact. In this study,we synthesized a graft bagasse as an oil-absorptive material for possible handling of sudden oil spills polluting incidents.Factors influencing the synthesis, including initiator amount, monomer ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time, were investigated in detail. And the optimum process conditions for making the absorption material synthesis were obtained.Using the fiberbased material for absorbing gasoline, the absorption ratio could reach 28.8g gasoline per gram of the modified bagasse. The modification of bagasse fiber provided a new method for utilizing the bagasse resource. The new fiber material had advantages of a large surface area, low cost, fast absorption rate, therefore it would be ideal to be used in handling oil spills accidents.
