Study on a New Method of Producing Magnesium by Using Al-Si Alloy as Reductant

At present,Pidgeon process is the dominant method of magnesium production and its output shares about 80% of the world. The industry of magnesium production by Pidgeon process is a kind of high energy and materials consumption and high waste residue emission. Producing magnesium using Al-Si alloy as reductant by vacuum thermal reduction can save energy and materials,reduce waste residue and CO2 emissioa The process of producing magnesium by vacuum metallothermic reduction using dolomite and magnesite as materials and using Al-Si alloy as reductant was studied in laboratory. The results show that the reduction ratio of MgO can over 93% under the conditions of CaF2 addition 3%,reduction temperature 1200 ?,reduction time 2h,the excess coefficient of reductant 5%.
