Rationing policies for inventory systems based on two demand classes
In this paper we consider a single item inventory system where two demand classes with different shortage cost rate. A critical level, reorder point, order quantity or (R, Q, K) policy is in use. The critical level mechanism is analyzed, and the inventory is virtually divided into base stockpile and upscale stockpiles, which technically and simply solve the policy parameters. Then numerical test shows the critical level policy could reduce inventory costs efficiently with dramatically lower stock. Meanwhile, it is indicated that the approximate optimization method in this paper is effective and sufficient.
