The Auxiliary Light Effect Analysis in Nighttime License Plate Segmentation

Adding auxiliary light is one of the most challenging problems in the area of character segmentation in the nighttime license plate identification. The auxiliary light effect is analyzed with comparing with image enhancement algorithm. First the nighttime license plate images are captured without auxiliary light or with adding auxiliary light in different areas near license plates. And then the original images are enhanced with contrast stretch linear transformation. Finally the original images and enhancement images are segmented with thresholding segmentation method. The experiments show that the segmentation effect of enhancement images without auxiliary light is better than the original images and enhancement images with auxiliary light. So the effect of adding auxiliary light is not better than image process algorithm in nighttime license plate segmentation because the position and illumination of auxiliary light on license plate are unstable.
