Geometric Calibration of Small Format Optical Digital Camera Using Photogrammetric Method

The geometric performance of small format digital camera is heavily influenced by optical distortion, which must be compensated through geometric calibration for precise applications such as photogrammetric mapping, remote sensing and archaeology. This paper pays close attention to the geometric calibration of optical digital camera using high-precision indoor three dimensional control field. The primary optical distortion of digital camera was discussed at first, and then the extended collinearity equations were derived. Considering that close range images may have large rotation angles and quaternion, the more robust method was introduced for camera orientation describing. With the replacement of omega, phi and kappa by quaternion, mathematic model for the geometric calibration of digital camera was set up. Three images of a 3D control field taken by a non-metric digital camera have been used to verify the algorithm, and the accuracy was better than 0.2 pixels.
