A Carrier Synchronization Algorithm of Low Complexity for MPSK Systems at Low SNR

This paper proposes a carrier synchronization algorithm which is suitable for the low signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) environment with the aim of resolving the synchronization problems and decreasing the complexity of existing algorithms. The algorithm is based on maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and the performance is optimal; a fast searching algorithm based on dichotomy is adopted, the required number of searching is proportionate to the logarithm of the maximum frequency offset and the computational is very low; the extra pilot sequences are not needed and the transmission efficiency will not be degraded. The theoretical analysis and simulation results all indicate that: the estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is close to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB); the proper data length for estimation can be selected according to the actual SNR to ensure valid carrier synchronization.
