A new robust speckle reduction algorithm for ultrasound images

Ultrasound image is usually seriously degraded by a type of noising named speckle,the reduction of speckle is an important problem for medical ultrasound image applications.In this paper,we proposed a robust detail preserving anisotropic diffusion method (RDPAD) for speckle reduction.The method integrated the Tukey function in robust error estimation and a recently proposed detail preserving anisotropic diffusion method.With the favorable property of the prohibited diffusion,the proposed method could alleviate an important problem in diffusion based partial differential equation methods,which is to decide the number of iterations in diffusion.The proposed method can reduce speckles while preserving important structure information of the original image.Experimental results on both synthetic and real ultrasound images showed the effectiveness of the method.
