Applying Projection Pursuit Model Based on Genetic Algorithm to Evaluate Urban Economic and Social Development Potential
Urban economic and social development potential evaluation is a complex system engineering. It requires new evaluation technologies and methods. Traditional evaluation methods are based on multivariate statistical analysis, which often can not get satisfactory results because of the dimension curse phenomenon. Projection pursuit model is the latest data reduction technique. Genetic Algorithm is a whole new global optimization algorithm. It can overcome the deficiencies of traditional evaluation methods by combining projection pursuit model with genetic algorithm. This paper built an evaluation index system from the economic, traffic, urban construction and social dimensions. Then the projection pursuit model based on genetic algorithm was used to evaluate the economic and social development potential of 45 districts and counties in Beijing Tianjin area. The results consistent with the objective reality of economic and social development in Beijing-Tianjin area. The method used in this paper can describe the similarities and differences more scientifically than traditional methods on the economic and social development potential of different cities. It reflects that this study can provide a new idea and method for urban economic and social development potential evaluation.
