A Hybrid Active Filter Based on Current Detection for Harmonic Suppression
Power-electronics circuits are widely used in industrial equipment, such as frequency changers, motor-drive systems, etc. Such equipment presents nonlinear impedance to the utility, generating large harmonic currents with well known adverse effects, such as low power factor, low efficiency and destruction of other equipment. Also, some precision instruments and communication equipment will be interfered. Therefore, utility power quality has become an important issue recently. This paper presents a hybrid active filter based on current detection for harmonic suppression. The compensating current flows into the power feeder in order to suppress the harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads. A hybrid active power filter is developed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. The system is modeled in MATLAB SIMULINK to consist of the nonlinear loads, with a hybrid active filter to compensate for the harmonic current injected by the nonlinear loads. The simulation results show that the proposed hybrid active power filter has the expected performance.
