Overview of Factors Influencing an Outburst and its Controls and Management
The outburst of coal and gas is a dynamic and complicated phenomenon. Its occurrence is influenced by many factors. This paper summaries the key factors contributing to the initiation and development of an outburst, reviews its prediction and prevention methods, as well as management control system as practiced in Australia. Despite a great effort in managing this phenomenon, outbursts continue to occur in coal mining and pose serious challenges to mine safety. It is recommended that detailed understanding of outbursts mechanism and development of appropriate technology to predict and prevent outbursts must continue to advance to minimize or eliminate the risk of outbursts in coal mining.
