HMSDN: A Hierarchical Multimedia StreamDelivery Network with Cross-layer Optimization
One problem in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming systems is the increasing inter-AS (autonomous system) traffic, which has put heavy burden on inter-AS links. To alleviate the problem, a hierarchical overlay system with cross-layer optimization for media streaming delivery, called HMSDN, is proposed in this paper. The framework of HMSDN is illustrated and some key issues are studied, including the deployment and the selection of overlay nodes, the update method of the multicast tree. We propose to place overlay nodes intelligently using the information of the underlay network topology. An algorithm is proposed for updating the multicast tree. The simulation results have shown that, compared with an unstructured P2P streaming systems, the inter-AS traffic has been reduced greatly in HMSDN, and the data transfer delay can be shortened substantially in large-scale scenarios.
