A Hybrid FEC/ARQ Mechanism for Wireless Media Streaming based on GOP fetching

This paper proposes a hybrid FEC/ARQ mechanism for wireless media streaming, in order that the multimedia could be played on receivers with high quality. This model, based on group of pictures (GOP) fetching according to the frame decoding dependency model of MPEG algorithm, which uses adaptive Forward Error Correction (FEC) at the application layer to adjust to the current network condition and the hybrid FEC/ARQ at the data link layer to meet the different requirement of wireless link, can improve the performance of wireless multimedia transmission. Our mathematical analysis shows that the proposed algorithm achieves better quality of media streaming, in terms of reliability, real-time performance and number of decodable frames on the receivers.
