POCA: Position-Aware Reliable Broadcasting in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

Reliable broadcasting in vehicular ad hoc networks is one of keys to success of services and applications on intelligent transportation system. But none of broadcast protocols address the speed of data dissemination issue. In this paper we propose a new reliable broadcasting protocol that can handle special characteristics of vehicular ad hoc networks with fast message delivery. Our protocol performs adaptive beaconing to retrieve 1-hop neighbors position and velocity vector. When a node has to broadcast a message, it uses this information to select one of its neighbors as the next rebroadcast node. Only the selected node will rebroadcast the message immediately. The node selection algorithm is based on positions of its neighbors in order for the message to be delivered to all vehicles with fastest speed. In case a node found a new neighbor that has not received the message, the node will rebroadcast the message from its buffer. This is to address intermittent connectivity issue. Our simulation results show that, in both highway and urban scenarios, our protocol can outperform other previous solutions in terms of reliability, speed of data dissemination and overhead. Moreover, the success rate of our node selection algorithm is 93-94% in average.
