Neighbor Discovery Optimization for 6LoWPAN
The IETF 6L0WPAN working group defines IPv6 for lowpower and lossy networks (6L0WPAN) such as IEEE 802.15.4 that have limited or no usage of multicast signaling due to energy conservation. Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) is a key technique for 6L0WPAN architecture. Nevertheless, the IPv6 Neighbor Discovery was not designed for LoWPAN since the traditional Neighbor Discovery Protocol make heavy use of multicast. This makes the Neighbor Discovery Protocol inefficient and sometimes impractical in 6L0WPAN. This paper describes some simple optimizations to Neighbor Discovery Protocol for meeting the requirements of low power consumption and low resource cost. A feasible prefix information advertisement algorithm is presented to greatly reduce the LoWPAN traffic on the condition that the most important functions of NDP are supported.
