Realtime Rendering of Terrain Based on GPU Accelerated Wavelet Reconstruction
An approach of realtime rendering of wavelet multiresolution terrain models based on GPU acceleration was proposed in order to improve rendering efficiency and effect. After building dynamic multi-resolution models of terrain grid through wavelet transformation with bior3.3 wavelet and removing boundary distortion through expanding original sampling range, the calculation of wavelet reconstruction was accelerated by developing general computing ability of GPU and designing a multiple render algorithm which is better fit to GPU. Then, a better rendering effect was realized by wavelet-progressive-reconstruction. Empirical results show that GPU accelerated wavelet reconstruction is faster that CPU calculation and a better performance will be obtain with large size terrain blocks.
