Effects of the wheels on trains aerodynamic characteristics under cross wind conditions
Numerical simulation of high Reynolds number flows past two types of complex train geometries, at small yaw angles up to 35°, were carried out in this paper. The threedimensional incompressible RANS, combined with the standard k-ε turbulence model, were solved on multi-block grids by a finite volume technique. The impact of wheels on aerodynamic characteristics of the train models was analyzed. Research shows that, the wheels do not change the basic flow structure except at the bottom of the train. However, they will increase the danger of the whole train under the cross wind conditions.
