A path optimization method for free form surface machining
This paper addresses the problem of generating tool path for free form surface machining with optimized tool path topology while the machining efficiency is maximized as much as possible. After revisiting the problems of current tool path generation method, a functional optimization problem with linear filtering is formulated for deriving an approximation direction field which can capture the global tendency of the original machining direction field. The EulerLagrange equation is given. Then the basic procedure for classification of machining regions and registration with particular cutting pattern is discussed. Finally, the simulation of generating tool path on a free form surface is given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
