The Effect Of R&D Teams Strategic Behavior Of Cooperation And Competition On Performance:The Relative Absorptive Capacity As Moderator

Drawing from the viewpoint of individual R & D team within strategic alliances, this study explores the effect of its strategic behavior choice of cooperation and competition on performance. The moderating effects of inter-team relative absorptive capacity on the above relationships are also taken into investigation for better understanding of their behavior selection and corresponding consequences. Several research propositions are presented based on an integrated research model. We propose that there is a positive effect of interaction of cooperation and competition on performance, which is further inversely U moderated by relative absorptive capacity. Pure strategic behavior of cooperation positively influences performance, which is positively moderated by relative absorptive capacity. The inverse U relationship between pure strategic behavior of competition and performance is negatively moderated by relative absorptive capacity. Overall, it indicates that strategy of simultaneous cooperation and competition would be a predictor of high performance for R & D teams within strategic alliance. And inter-team relative absorptive capacity would play a critical role in determination which dominated strategic attitude R & D teams would take towards other partner teams within strategic alliance.
