Performance of free space optical communication through gamma-gamma turbulence channels with spatial diversity

Free space optical (FSO) communications is a costeffective and high bandwidth access technique, which has been receiving growing attention recent yeares. However, the performance of FSO is severely suffers from the turbulence induced fading which severely degrades the link performance. To mitigate turbulence-induced fading and, therefore, to improve the error rate performance, spatial diversity can be used over FSO. In this paper, using OOK intensity modulation/ direct detection, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of FSO links with spatial diversity over gamma-gammal atmospheric turbulence fading channels. The atmospheric turbulence effects on the system bit error rate are analyzed. The equal gain combined diversity and optimal gain combined space diversity technology are compared. Results show that the FSO performance can be improved effectively.
