Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics to the Study of the Ventilation Performance of Green Building Features

Green building features including windcatcher and wing walls used in residential buildings that can increase the performance of natural ventilation. This paper presents a summary of the numerical studies of the performance of windcatcher and wing walls using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). For the study of the windcatcher, the numerical results indicate that the windcatcher performance is greatly influenced by the wind speed and wind direction with respect to the windcatcher quadrants. For the study of the wing wall, the numerical results indicate that wing wall can promote natural ventilation by increasing the air change per hour and the mean indoor air speed relative to wind speed at various wind speeds and wind directions.
