Energy-Absorbing Characteristics of the Stiffened Thin-Walled Tubes Subjected to Lateral Crushing

Different stiffen methods were adopted to increase the lateral energy absorbing capacity of the popularly used hat sections. Lateral energyabsorption performance of the stiffened thin-walled tubes was studied numerically via non-linear finite element code Is-dyna. First non-stiffened hat section subjected to quasi-static lateral crushing was simulated, then structures with different stiffened parameters were calculated, finally energy absorption capacity of these structures were compared. Results showed that, for the appropriate designed stiffened tube, the internal energy absorbed was increased significantly compared to the non-stiffened;the mass specific energy absorption capacity increased more than 40%. The improvement of the bending crashworthiness was mainly due to the contact of opposite faces of the stiffened structures.
