The effects of the mesh size in simulating the cylinder under axial impact

By using dynamic explicit finite element method, the dynamic responses of thin-walled cylinders under axial impact are analyzed and the deformations and the developments of the dynamic buckling are simulated. The numerical results and the theoretical solutions of the impact model in different mesh sizes are compared which reveals the effect of mesh size should be considered in non-linear finite element analysis of structure design. This paper gives a beneficial reference to study the interrelation between the mesh size and the accuracy of the numerical method, which helps to improve the finite element efficiency and benefits accuracy of numerical arithmetic. At the same time, the method of this study satisfies the requirements of engineering calculations.
