Damage diagnosis by sensitivity analysis using arbitrary-scaled mode shapes

In this paper, a very simple approach that extends the eigenvector perturbation technique to tackle the ambient vibration case is proposed. By transposition of the sensitivity equation, the mass normalization factor of the arbitrary-scaled mode shape along with the elemental damage parameters can be calculated simultaneously using the least-square mediod. As a by-product of the proposed approach, in addition to the extent of the damage, an estimate of the mass normalization factor also can be obtained, which may be useful for other problem. The most significant advantage of the proposed method is that it is economical in computation and is simple to implement. The presented method is demonstrated on a thirty-one-bar truss structure with and without measurement noise. Results show that the presented method can identify structural damages successfully even if only arbitrary-scaled mode shapes are presented.
