Real-Time Lane Change Detection for Automobile Navigation

GPS has been widely used in many applications recently, and showed some successful application in assisting drivers planning navigation paths In spite of relatively accurate positioning capability of a GPS system, there still exists some challenges in providing a driver important information regarding several events on the road such as no signal in covered area and no detailed positioning means on road. Among the many applications to detect various road events, one of the most useful applications would be detecting road signs that provide drivers essential information for safe driving. In particular, we present a real time lane change detection method to further detailed localization of the vehicle. The real time lane detection system is based on similarity analyses on a set of predetermined regions where most of the events are detected. Our experimental results show relatively high accuracy on left-to-right and right-to-left lane change events as well as detecting some road signs printed on the pavement. The method is fast enough for real time detection processing about 5 frame per second on a personal computer with Intel? Core?2 Quad CPU Q6600.
