Local Understanding and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Research studies on culturally relevant pedagogy have pointed out the importance of cultural traditions in shaping learners beliefs, attitudes and styles of learning. These studies observe that when pedagogical practices build on or align with learners cultural values and practices, academic achievements are enhanced. In this presentation, I shall report, for illustration, a study of the successful pedagogical strategies that two L2 writing teachers developed over the years. These strategies were not dictated by some prejudice about a particular approach to L2 writing but rooted in the cultural traditions of the learners as well as the micro-cultures of the classroom. They demonstrated a profound understanding of the learners and the cultural values and traditions that they brought with them into the classroom. The skillful and sensitive employment of these strategies by the teachers opened up rich opportunities for students to learn to be better writers. I shall argue that it is important for teachers to develop a local understanding of the specific setting in which teaching is located and the larger sociocultural setting in which it is embedded.
