Literature Review and the Teaching of Research Writing in Literature Classroom
In a term paper, a student interpret this line Come, you spirits/That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here (Macbeth I, v, 48-9) as Lady Macbeth wants to change her sex! Obviously, no Shakespeare scholars would agree on this point. From her paper, her mistake is commonly seen in the papers written by both undergraduate and graduate students majored in literature. Their major problem: they fail to conduct a literature review at the very beginning of their research projects. It is discovered that many students majored in literature do not have any idea of or not know how to conduct literature review when writing masters dissertations or research papers. From time to time, they try to trim literary works to fit in the theory or write something out of impression without any empirical research. As a result, their research writings are crude and shallow.
