Patterns and Purposes of Language Switching Made by Thai EFL Learners

Interactive group work learning is a common practice in communicative language teaching to stimulate learner-learner dialogues in a cognitively demanding but linguistically and socially supportive situation. Group work, however, may entail excessive use of the learners L1, especially when learners do not have language at their disposal. The study explores how language use is switched from L2 to L1 by learners of English from five technical tertiary institutions. The sampling represents the population of EFL students of science and technology, with limited English proficiency. Groups of randomly assigned participants will be given a task which consists of conflicts fruitful for discussion points. The ultimate goal of this qualitative research is to discover the language switching phenomena such as patterns of the behaviour and to uncover the purposes of language alteration. Qualitative analyses of these dialogues will demonstrate the value of language switching in collaborative and interactive talk upon task completion in relation to interlanguage development. The results of the study may yield the implication of to what extent tolerance of language switching is recommended and in what types of situations.
