The Use of Rewards and Miracles as Influential Devices in a Collection of the Twenty-four Filial Tales, and the Sustenance of an Unequal Social Structure
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not our literary tales for children in Taiwan use rewards and miracles as devices to influence our children in becoming a certain type of person, that is, a filial one. The National Taichung Library was the source of the selected sample, since it is an influential library for a great number of people who live in and around the city of Taichung. The selected subject was Tzus (n.d.) The Twenty-four Filial Tales. It was found that the collection uses reward and miracle devices as a means to guide the readers to become filial persons. This study implicates that it is important for us to know that literary tales for children in Taiwan, along with their illustrations, can use certain literary devices to sustain an unequal social structure.
