Common Collocation Errors of College Students in Taiwan

The importance of collocation has received increasing attention for the past two decades. This paper investigated the common collocation errors college students in Taiwan committed and the major factors in miscollocations. Most previous studies concentrated on V + N combinations of lexical collocations mainly; this study examined both lexical collocations and grammatical collocations. A total of 355 first-year non-English major college students from three universities participated in this study is another distinct feature. By means of a 50-item multiplechoice collocation test and a questionnaire, the study clarified the issues and yielded their results: V + N collocation was the most demanding lexical collocation, whereas N + Prep. collocation was the most challenging grammatical collocation for the participants. L1 transfer, overgeneralization, and misapplication of synonyms were the crucial factors in collocation errors. These results corresponded to the participants opinions in the questionnaire and their scores on the collocation test
