A Computational Tool to Assist the Acquisition of Tense and Aspect in Foreign Languages

In this paper we take a comparative linguistic approach to study a specific problem that native Chinese tend to have when learning English or French: the choice of verb tense. For the learner it is nearly inevitable to take his mother tongue as reference when learning a new language. This is why we think it is worthy to take a comparative approach and take a closer look at the verbal systems of the source language (SL) and target language (TL). What are their respective ways to encode temporalaspectual information? We have conceived a tool to draw the learners attention to these differences, inviting him to pay particilar attention to certain constraints in the TL and to make necessary morphological adjustments to the verb.
