Wiki Application in EFL Writing Courses
This study presents the reasons and benefits of wiki application in writing tasks in higher education for EFL(English as Foreign Language) students. The collaborative and web-based features make wikis a powerful tool for writing practice where both personal/group contribution and feedbacks are available. Wiki environments could help to build EFL students confidence and help learners to develop meta-linguistic awareness and learning autonomy in writing. Current technology has greatly contributed to learning effectiveness while various setting of learning still requires different applications. Studies and real cases have showed that the development of web 2.0 indeed increases the interaction and collaboration among users/learners. Educators have realized the importance of collaboration in learning while social software prosperously getting popular and well-developed. The combination of the concept and technology brings new approach to education, while practical guidelines and instructional models for design and development of social software in writing curriculum is needed. This study aims to develop an instructional model for college EFL writing courses, with the use of wikis, the open, many-to-many, easy-to-edit internetconnected platform. Writing projects and writing courses are reviewed to produce general guidelines for instructional design. The concepts of social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence in e-learning environments are examined and applied to establish Wikis for Collaborative Writing Model (WCW Model). As an initial study examining wiki applications in college writing course in Taiwan, this study is meant to provide preliminary suggestions to refine or modify the research of wiki application in language education.
