Student Perceptions of Multimedia English Instructional Materials

This study attempts to provide students with practical experience in manufacturing multimedia English teaching materials, and to elicit learner opinions regarding online learning courses and how to improve multimedia teaching materials. A group of six senior students produced two different sets of multimedia English teaching materials for viewing by 154 students. Viewer opinions were surveyed via a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The main results of the investigation were as follows: 1. Providing appealing and stimulating audio-visual teaching materials can arouse student learning interests and thus make them more likely to become self-directed learners. 2. Lecturer sound and intonation, text and layout, and interactive teaching materials are the three key considerations when producing multimedia teaching materials. 3. Three-quarters of respondents believe that online distance learning cannot substitute for traditional teaching. Additionally, while forty percent of the respondents believe that distance learning is an ineffective learning method, more than one third agree that distance learning is the future trend in learning. 4. How to produce interesting and interactive online materials to motivate students to learn is a challenge for online instructors.
