What Is So Funny? :Problems in English-Thai Translation of TV Sitcom Humor
This paper examines Thai subtitled versions of ten American sitcom episodes shown on cable TV in Thailand with special attention to translation problems that could lead to the loss of humor. In order to check whether the humor was really lost in translation, questionnaires aimed at investigating peoples perception of humor were prepared based on humorous instances contained in the ten sitcom episodes. The questionnaires were administered to a sample of Thai and American viewers and only humorous instances that were rated as funny by the Americans but not funny by the Thais were explored further into translation problems. It was found out that there were four translation problems that impeded the transfer of sitcom humor, namely socio-culturalrestricted problems, linguistic-restricted problems, multimodal-restricted problems, and inappropriate choice of translation method problems.
