The Effects of Peer Evaluation in Interpreting Training

The study investigated the effects of peer evaluation on the perceptions, the self-esteem, and the learning anxiety of students in an interpreting course. Sixteen students majoring in the MA program of applied foreign languages participated in the study to reflect their meta-cognitive reactions to the phenomena under investigation. I employed a qualitative research approach in conducting this study. A combination of grounded theory and participatory action research methodology was used to investigate peer evaluation in the interpreting course. To collect data, I conducted field observations, interviews, surveys, and also gathered information through an online discussion forum, and from audio-video recordings of the students classroom performance. To analyze the data, I used content analysis and descriptive statistics. The results suggest that the implementation of peer evaluation may confer benefits on an interpreter training course and may lead to an overall enhancement of student performance and a decreased level of learning anxiety. Therefore, peer evaluation may serve as an effective teaching strategy to promote group collaboration and student selflearning.
