The Role of Media in Materials Development in TCSL Context

In the field of teaching Chinese as a second foreign language (TCSL/TCFL), there are discussions on how to teach communicative competence and intercultural competence (Munby 1978, Canale & Swain 1980, Robinson 1988, Byram 1989, Kramsch 1993). This paper demonstrates two materials development projects, Chinese movies materials development and a newspaper article database. Both materials are used in teaching Chinese as a foreign language classrooms in Hong Kong. Effective use of authentic materials like movies and newspaper can strengthen learners cultural awareness. The materials presented are actually in use in language classrooms. Demonstration will be given in the paper on how the materials and viewing/reading tasks are used in the language classrooms.
