Complex System Network Elements Employed in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
Three features among the characteristics of complex system networks were applied to teaching Chinese as a second language to adult students in the United States. In this paper, connection between L1 and L2 for lexicon retention, self-organization to aid grammaring and syntax construction, and frequency dependency as well as mentalese during discourse will be examined. In the first part of this paper, the authors present some examples constructed by native English speakers on sound linking/association between English and Chinese lexicons. The second part of the paper, inspired by Dr. Diane Larsen-Freemans book, From Grammar to Grammaring, demonstrates the Chinese grammaring process using Microsofts Excel spreadsheet Finally, the authors discusses their experience guiding students as they practice conversing in Chinese by mapping their mental language (mentalese) and the challenges subsequently encountered.
