Overview of Risk Importance Measures and Investigation on Their Applications for Maintenance

Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) has been more and more widely applied in safety-critical industries such as Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). Among all the objectives from a PSA, a major one is to help focus attention on the most important systems when performing maintenance, namely risk-informed maintenance. This is particularly beneficial when resources are limited in practical applications. To achieve this goal, Risk Importance Measures (RIMs) derived from a PSA can be utilized. There are numerous RIMs defined in the literature. It can be confusing as to which one to use under different circumstances. The purpose of the paper is to provide an overview of existing RIMs. The ones that have been given different names but are essentially equivalent are identified. Afterwards, they are grouped into two major categories: the risk significant measures and the safety significant measures. These two categories of importance measures provide different information with regard to different maintenance practices. Both coherent and non-coherent systems are analyzed. The results show that for both types of systems, the risk significant measures should be used for corrective maintenance, while the safety significant measures should be associated with preventive maintenance.
