Safety Evaluation of Gemini-Type Quaternary Ammonium Salt Antibacterial Reagent
To assess safety of gemini-type quaternary ammonium salt as a germicide, toxicity characteristics of benzyl dimethyl dodecyl ammonium chloride BAC, 1-methyl-1-dodecyl piperazinium chloride MDP, 1,4-didodecyl piperazinium dichloride DDP and l,l-(decanedioyl)bis (4-methyl -4-dodecyl piperazinium chloride)s DCP were evaluated by the investigation of minimum inhibitory concentrationMIC, minimum hemolysis concentrationMC50, cytotoxicityLC50 and acute oral toxicity. The results revealed that MIC, HC50and LC50of DCP are 1.6, 15.5 and 31.0 μmol-L-1, respectively. That of DDP are 8.3, 8.0 and 25.0 μmol-L-1, respectively. That of DMP are 24.1, 31.0 and 87.0 μmol-L-1, respectively. That of BAC are 28.9, 38.4 and 120.0 μmol-L-1, respectively. All of QACs used in the acute oral toxicity test belongs to actually non-toxic grade. It is suggest that gemini-type quaternary ammonium salt antibacterial reagent has higher safety than mono-type, and HC50/MIC or LC50/MIC as a parameter is more important to safety evaluation of QACs antibacterial reagent.
