Fire Loads Survey and Data Analysis of Commercial Buildings

Advances in the scientific and technological understanding of fire have led to a drive to use fire models in advanced fire safety design. The accuracy of fire simulating results depends on the selecting of fire scenario and design fire. Fire load is a determinative factor in fire risk assessment, and it is also an important content in design fires. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted in the cities of Langfang, Changzhi, Zhengzhou and Tianjin to characterize fire loads in commercial premises. The survey included various commercial establishments such as restaurants, clothing stores, shoe stores and etc. Five different types of combustible material groups collected were analyzed to determine the total fire load. A total of 117 commercial premises were surveyed with a total floor area of 4095m2. The area of the surveyed stores ranged from 2.5 m2 to 185 m2. The fire load densities of the 117 surveyed stores had a lognormal distribution with a mean value of 1230 MJ/m2, a maximum value of 6813.4 MJ/m2, a minimum value of 92 MJ/m2, and a standard deviation of 1240.5 MJ/m2.
