Experimental Investigation on Oxidation and Spontaneous Combustion of Iron Fulfide

Ferrous sulfide, the corrosion product of oil tanks with sulfur, is the major threat to refinery security. Experiment on ferrous sulfide spontaneous combustion is carried out. Research results show that ferrous sulfide oxidation consists of three periods: induction period of oxidation, oxidation period and accelerate period of oxidation. Oxidation of ferrous sulfide is the main cause of spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion factors of ferrous sulfide are investigated in the experiment. The results suggest that the higher the ambient temperature, the more easily spontaneous combustion happens. Ambient humidity shows little effect on the spontaneous combustion process. The presence of water and crude oil inhibit the spontaneous combustion of ferrous sulfide. The existence of sulfur promotes oxidation of ferrous sulfide and speeds up the process of spontaneous combustion.
