Experimental Study on Smoldering Combustion of Grain Byproducts

Experimental study of concurrent smoldering combustion of grain byproducts was carried out in a vertical flow combustion chamber, thermocouples and gas sample instrument were used to measure the temperature and gas of smoldering respectively, the influence of flow rate, bulk density and percentage of dust on the smoldering propagation velocity was investigated. Results indicate that the self sustained smoldering is possible at relatively low flow rate, the characteristic gas of smoldering are CO2 and CO, at early stage, smoldering combustion velocity increases significantly with flow rate and decrease linearly with bulk density, smoldering can transit to open fire under certain condition.
