Development and Trend of Aerosol Fibrous Filtration Theory

The aerosol fibrous filtration theory has made substantial progress since the early days of twentieth century. The theory has been able to successfully explain the mechanisms of interception, inertial impaction, diffusion, gravitation and electrostatic attraction deposition of particles inside the filter media. The isolated infinitely long cylinder, array of cylinders, arrays of parallel cylinders, fan, multi-fiber and other more complex models were came up successively. Corresponding equations of potential flow, viscous flow-Lambs solution, Kuwabara-Happel flow fields etc. were solved. The single-fiber efficiency equations of isolated deposition mechanism and combined mechanisms, single-fiber drag force equations applicable to a wide range of conditions were obtained through the studies of particle deposition mechanisms in the model filter media. The research emphasis is now being extended from stationary filtration to non-stationary and nanometer level filtration. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of aerosol fibrous filtration process has made great progress and been used to study particle movement and deposition in the filtration media. It is becoming a new method to describe the filtration mechanisms more detailedly and objectively. The shortcomings of the existing theories were analyzed. New research areas and directions were put forward.
